Virtual Reef Diver: Enabling People to Help Protect the Great Barrier Reef

چکیده
Two Sustainable Development Goals are focused directly on combating the impacts of climate change coral reef communities: Goal 13, Climate Action (Take urgent action to combat and its impacts) 14, Life Below Water (Conserve sustainably use oceans, seas marine resources for sustainable development). Citizen science (CS) features prominently in a range programs that have been developed address SDGs. One such program is Virtual Reef Diver, which designed help monitor health Great Barrier Australia. This engages citizen scientists two ways. Scuba-divers asked take geo-coded underwater images upload them an online virtual reef. Members public across world then classify these with respect key indicators as coral. Through lens Diver event held part Australia’s National Science Week 2021, we describe important this positively common concerns about CS data, including scientific trustworthiness ability incorporate data other more traditional sources, quantifiable improvement information using management decisions. demonstrates role can play achieving SDGs by supporting development global policies conservation.

The exposure of the Great Barrier Reef to ocean acidification.
The Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is founded on reef-building corals. Corals build their exoskeleton with aragonite, but ocean acidification is lowering the aragonite saturation state of seawater (Ωa). The downscaling of ocean acidification projections from global to GBR scales requires the set of regional drivers controlling Ωa to be resolved. Here we use a regional coupled circulation-biogeochemic...
متن کاملThe Semantic Reef: Managing Complex Knowledge to Predict Coral Bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef
A semantically driven Virtual Organisation (VO) model for predicting important events for coral reefs is presented – the Semantic Reef. The model is an application of a Semantic Grid that encapsulates services and resources to produce a complex higher-level knowledge base in order to predict coral bleaching on the Great Barrier Reef. The goal is to enable the synergistic interplay between diffe...
متن کاملHerbicides: a new threat to the Great Barrier Reef.
The runoff of pesticides (insecticides, herbicides and fungicides) from agricultural lands is a key concern for the health of the iconic Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Relatively low levels of herbicide residues can reduce the productivity of marine plants and corals. However, the risk of these residues to Great Barrier Reef ecosystems has been poorly quantified due to a lack of large-scale dat...
متن کاملLate Holocene island reef development on the inner zone of the northern Great Barrier Reef: Insights from Low Isles Reef
A sedimentological and stratigraphic study of Low Isles Reef off northern Queensland, Australia was carried out to improve understanding of factors that have governed Late Holocene carbonate deposition and reef development on the inner to middle shelf of the northern Great Barrier Reef. Low Isles Reef is one of 46 low wooded island-reefs unique to the northern Great Barrier Reef, which are situ...
متن کاملCoral Reef Community Composition in the Context of Disturbance History on the Great Barrier Reef, Australia
Much research on coral reefs has documented differential declines in coral and associated organisms. In order to contextualise this general degradation, research on community composition is necessary in the context of varied disturbance histories and the biological processes and physical features thought to retard or promote recovery. We conducted a spatial assessment of coral reef communities ...
